My Biggest Frenemy
Jolting awake, I jerk around wildly, trying to locate the source of the noise. The incessant beeping grows louder and more frequent by the second. Finally, my gaze lands upon the culprit, My alarm clock.
The large, neon green numbers, 7:30AM, seem to jump off the dark oval display, letting me know the time it will be in exactly four and a half minutes from now. Even though I know the clock is fast, it gets me moving.
Above the time, in small silver letters, the brand name “SONY” stands perfectly upright, each letter like a little soldier. Around the border of the clock, smaller numbers and letters are stamped in white, too small for me to read without my glasses.
Sighing, I slowly get out of bed to come face to face with my enemy. I lift my finger and jab the right most of the three buttons, the one labeled “OFF.” The noise vanishes.
As I walk around my room, preparing myself for the day ahead, I notice a black, snake - like cord slithering down the nightstand and into the wall. The clock’s source of energy.
If I just unplugged it, what would happen? I muse to myself. My mind wanders to Sundays, when I can stay in bed as late as I want. Imagine if I could do that every day? But then I think of the school work I would have to make up each day. As I contemplate this, I realize that as much as I dislike this clock, I actually rely on it to get me going.
Ready for school, I perch on my bed, mulling over this new epiphany and the inherent truth in it. After a minute, the numbers on the clock register in my still drowsy brain, I jump up, and rush out of the room. I stop by the door, turn around and set my alarm again for tomorrow, just in case I forget. I roll my eyes, because I know I won’t.
